When the world feels scary
And it will
Remember love
Remember, that is your hill.
Don’t climb it like it’s a game of
‘King of the Hill’
Don’t disregard the peak of terror
Like it’s ‘run of the mill’
No, when this world feels affright
And it will
Look to the mountains
Remember, that too is your hill
Love IS the hill to die on
For it casts out the fear
The mountains, where your help comes from
The Lord is near
For God is love
Love to all
God is mercy
Let the proud fall
There are other ways to scale the hard places
Yet power is a dull pick-axe for terror
Money and fame helps not
But Jesus is the anxiety Carer
At the end of the day
I just want you to remember
~it’s love~
Love is the hill
And if you must die a death by societal scorn
You must die on that hill for another
It will be as if you’ve laid down your life
For a sister, a brother, an ‘other’
And you will have walked the way of the cross
A mile in their shoes
You will have walked across borders
To let love loose
So if you choose a hill to die on
Let it be love
Cause the world will feel scary, it will
Remember love
Remember, that is your hill

I wrote this poem for my four daughters. Because life can feel scary--trying to make a decent wage, trying to rear children with virtue and values, trying to navigate the political climate with empathy, compassion and mercy; trying to walk the way of the Cross to love God, love neighbor and love enemy-- it can feel scary, But love.

"Therefore, come what may, hold fast to love. Though men should rend your heart, let them not embitter or harden it. We win by tenderness; we conquer by forgiveness.” F.W. Robertson
Perfect love casts out fear. (1 John 4)
I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
(Psalm 121:1,2)
For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, LOVE and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)
On this Valentine's Day, there are many causes clamoring for our affections. There is an ongoing onslaught of demands for our attention. There are 'hills to die on' posted on every social media platform and in every server inbox.
May we each give our attention and our affections to love.
To love the least of these the most.
To perfect the law of love that we might lay down our lives for another.
To throw fear back into the hell in which it came from.
Love, that is your hill.
